Depression in Men-Introduction
Men experience emotions different. What does that mean? That means we learned how to express, or not express (more typical), our emotions by assimilating societal or familial values on how we feel, express, and behave as men. Many of us learned to do this by watching our fathers as children.
Common signs and symptoms of depression include, feel tired, anxious, trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, loss of interest in activities we once enjoyed and many others. Short periods of depression following stressful events, such as loss of a loved one, or employment are common, and usually resolve on their own. However, longer periods of depression can have severe effects on daily living. Follow up with a health care provider qualified in mental health disorders is recommended to avoid long-term problems. Early identification and recognition is key to successful management and treatment of depression.
